a picture is worth a thousand words

From the beginning of our marriage, we knew we wanted to have children. We hadn't yet agreed on how many -- hubby wanted 5 or more, but I think my limit is really 3. Regardless, God will decide on that one. We decided to start trying actively, not just practicing, in the spring of 2005. I fully expected to wait 6 months to a year to become pregnant because I had been on birth control for so long. So I was quite surprised to get pregnant after only three months.

I had spent that Saturday at a pool party, drinking glass after glass of frozen appletinis. When I woke up Sunday, I didn't feel great, but figured I had drank a little too much. Sunday afternoon I still wasn't feeling well, followed by a Monday with small amounts of food and large amounts of naseau. I didn't think that I had drank enough to have a two day hangover, but I was still chalking it up to that. By Tuesday afternoon still not feeling well, I left work early thinking I might have a stomach bug or something. About 4:00 I thought, hmmm, maybe I'll just take a pregnancy test, just to rule that out. I did my thing and waited. I walked back in the bathroom, saw the results and my jaw dropped on. It went a little something like this:

"Oh my God!"

"OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OHMYGOD, OHMYGOD!"

I ran to the trash can to pull the directions out of the trash just to be sure that I was reading the results correctly.

I ran around the house, "OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OHMYGOD, OHMYGOD!" for probably a good 10 minutes.

Then I had to figure out how to tell my husband. I wanted to do something unique and fun and surprising, but just then he called to let me know his business partner was in town and that he was going to dinner with him. He asked if I wanted to join them for dinner. I really didn't want to break the news to my husband with his partner there. Not exactly romantic or fun. I also wasn't sure if we wanted to tell people right away or not. But I didn't want to wait until after dinner. I knew I couldn't wait that long to tell him.

So I took pictures of the pregnancy test, lots of pictures. When hubby and his partner came to the house, I hid the test so he wouldn't see it. Luckly, hubby and I were taking our own car, so when we got in, I took my camera out and told him I wanted to show him this picture that I took that day. He looked at it, looked at me, looked back at the picture and then got this big grin on his face and said, "Really?"

"Really."

"That's awesome!"

He of course wanted to tell the whole world immediately. So did I, but I really wanted to have it confirmed by a doctor before we told everyone, just in case. We did end up telling his partner and the next day I called the doctor. Much to my surprise, the nurse told me that if the test said I was pregnant, I was pregnant.

I called my Mom and my stepmom and Dad and my sister and my best friend. Then I sent out an email with the subject "The best picture I've ever taken" and attached the picture of the positive pregnancy test.
